Discipleship or Membership?

That which we commonly call "The Great Commission" (Matthew 28:18-20) is not about making the people of your community members of the local church, regardless of whether you subscribe to any denominational or non-denominational doctrines. The church (Greek: ekklesia, which is defined as those whom God has called) is not an organization or institution. The church is a living organism and each believer is a member of that living body of Christ, which we call the church. Therefore, the Great Commission is a commandment to seek out those whom God has called and to disciple them in the way of the Lord, teaching them to observe all that He has commanded us.

Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

(Matthew 28:18-20 in the NIV)

Jesus did not go to the marbled halls of higher education to recruit his twelve disciples, some of which turned out to be the original writers of the books which we call the New Testament. He found them in fishing boats, at the tax table and in small villages among the common people. "The Lord sees not as man sees, for man looks on the outer appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart." The gospel is not so complicated that it could not be understood by common men with an uncommon heart for God.
